The Black Mill is a living Bread Museum, an open-air museum where visitors can take part in workshops mimicking the ancient process of bread baking - "from seed to loaf". The facility is located in an old 19th-century watermill.
To this day, you can admire the original equipment of the mill, renovated in 2011-2012. It allowed the launching of a replica of the water wheel and adapting the buildings for the disabled. The living Bread Museum presents old milling and baking equipment in three rooms: Bread Room, Devil's Wheel Room, and Technology Room. One of the biggest attractions is a 100-year-old working bread oven. Worth seeing are also the Feast Hall and Herbs and Plants Garden. The specialty of the Devil's Mill is bread baked on site, served with lard and pickles or with freshly whipped butter.
Czarci Młyn in Świeradów-Zdrój (Czerniawa neighborhood) is a “living Bread Museum” and an open-air production museum housed in a historic watermill dating from the late 19th century. It is a place where you can see fully functional, original milling machinery and participate in bread-baking workshops “from grain to loaf.”
Since food production and bread baking in a historic oven take place at Czarcim Młyn, dogs are not allowed inside the exhibition halls (the Bread Hall and the Technology Hall). However, visitors with pets may stay in the outdoor areas of the facility, such as the Herb and Plant Garden.
Local lore claims that the mill’s name comes from a pact that a former miller made with the devil, asking him to help with the construction and ensure success in business. Today, this legend creates a unique atmosphere that attracts tourists seeking thrilling tales.
Yes, thanks to a thorough renovation carried out in 2011–2012, the Devil’s Mill buildings have been adapted to the needs of people with disabilities. This allows for a comfortable visit to the exhibits as well as participation in demonstrations and tastings.
Admission to the facility is free, but guided tours or participation in bread-baking workshops may require a nominal fee and advance registration. It’s worth checking the current workshop schedule before your planned visit to ensure availability.
Czarci Młyn is located about 4 km from Hotel Elements. The walk takes about 60 minutes and leads through the quiet, green areas of Świeradów-Zdrój. The drive takes just 5–7 minutes, and guest parking is available on site.
